Blogs Have Become to Me What LinkedIn Should Be

To me, LinkedIn was supposed to be the professional network — a place for thoughtful discussion about work related stuff and genuine connection. Yet, over the years, it feels that the content and tone has shifted for engagement (“what do you think?”, “how do you do it?”), self glorification (“especially after quitting a company and highlighting all the successes” srsly, if it was so cool, why did they quit?) and provocative extremes. Everything for the reach.

A while I go I have drawn away from LinkedIn and made a sparate account on the Mastodon to follow some IT people. And well – it was ways better already! People share because they have something to say, not because they’re chasing likes or reach. It feels less … excited?

And it feels like people share ways more links to blog posts. The ones I discover through Mastodon or platforms like Bearblog or PowRSS are exactly what LinkedIn should be (at least to me): people writing down their experiences without the need for engagement farming. No algorithms. No metrics. No Monetization. No engagement farming.

I’ve come to realize that blogs have filled the void that LinkedIn left behind in my needs. And whenever I come across an article that I like, I check out the other blog posts (or titles) and add the blog to my RSS reader. — I don’t follow a lot of blogs yet. But it’s getting more.

And for me it’s the same: Sometimes I want to share a HowTo, sometimes I just want to write down my thoughts. Or I come across an article that I find worth keeping in mind and / or worth sharing.
