  • Read: We are going to kill “unalive”

I just read Anil Dash’s post about some internet jargon. And, I first thought “yeah well, that’s the algorithm game”. But then, it became — once more — apparent to me, what it actually means. And Anil nails it quite well with this:

“One of the things that’s most concerning to me is that an entire generation has grown up not realizing how extreme it is that their very language is being chosen for them by platforms run by people who hate that generation’s ability to express itself, and who hate the things it has to say.”

    @anildash@me.dm

And it’s not just about avoiding certain words, but also behaviour: adding the right words to be found, putting links in comments or just avoiding them, etc. (BTW: I once was shadowbanned on Instagram with my photography profile .. likely because I used the word “shots” ..)

This is not freedom of speech. This is a trick game we shouldn’t have to play. And we do not have to, we just need to leave those platforms. I love my blogs, I love my fediverse accounts, … Yes, on a fediverse server I also have to play by the rules of that server. But these are social rules, not rules of engagement. And I am free to switch to another server.

  • How Deepfakes and AI-Slop Undermine Democracy

I am still watching the recordings of talks given on the Chaos Communications Congress (see the talks here). Katharina Nocun gave a talk titled Doomsday-Porn, Schäferhunde und die „niedliche Abschiebung“ von nebenan where she shows a really disturbing trend: AI-generated content is becoming a cornerstone of authoritarian and far-right communication strategies.

  • Goodbye Facebook

Finally! My Facebook account is deleted.

My Facebook-Exit is a long story. I never really used it a lot. I used it mostly to have the possibility to contact some people. Especially from university when they went to other countries or so.

  • Loops soon SelfHosting!

I just saw this post from @dansup announcing self-hosting to be available for Loops “very soon”.

If you haven’t heard about Loops before: Loops is a short-form video platform designed for the decentralized Fediverse, where users share videos like TikTok.

Compared to TikTok, Loops offers a few notable advantages: it’s decentralized, so no single company controls the entire platform or its content. Users and communities can (soon) host their own servers and set their own moderation policies. Federation within the Fediverse is not YET there but I’m very sure it will come soon as well..

I also have an account on Loops since quite early (search “hikingdude”), but I do not (yet) post a lot of videos there. – I’m really considering the self-hosting. Maybe as soon as it’s available – or I wait until YunoHost has it in its app garden.

  • A New Era of Social Media – Video by Elena Rossini

If you are not following Elena Rossini, you might have missed her really great video about the Fediverse. I find it a very nice and clean way – not focusing on technology but on us, the users. She doesn’t lecture or explain too much – she just shares what she’s found: a space that feels more human. No ads, no algorithmic pressure, just room to breathe and exchange. No ads, no algorithmic pressure, just us.

This video is a colorful introduction to the Fediverse, guided by filmmaker & Fediverse advocate Elena Rossini. Watch now to discover a whole new world of social media, one where privacy is respected, users are empowered, and Big Tech has no say.

  • PeerTube and Platform Control

I didn’t even plan to blog something today, but a couple of things came together around PeerTube that convinced me to drop a post today. But, maybe before we start … PeerWHAT? you might ask.

    Interlude: What is PeerTube?

TL;DR: An open source / self hosted YouTube

PeerTube is a video platform that works a bit differently from sites like YouTube. Instead of one company running it, PeerTube is made up of many small, connected servers – so there’s no central control. You can watch, upload, and share videos just like you’re used to, but without ads or tracking. PeerTube also connects with other platforms like Mastodon, so videos can reach more people across the Fediverse. It’s a privacy-friendly option for discovering and sharing content on your terms.

A more technical description can be found on Wikipedia: PeerTube – Wikipedia

  • Decentralization of BlueSky

Bkuesky has gained quite some traction in the last couple of months. One of the key features that is often named pro BlueSky is the idea of decentralization.

In the recent episode of the “Haken dran” Podcast, a study was mentioned that does a deep dive into the technical details. The article is this one: How decentralized is Bluesky really? — Dustycloud Brainstorms, a german “version” was named as well: Deep Dive zu Bluesky – Teil 1: Die technische Sicht.

The essence is: Bluesky is not (yet?) decentralized. Well – I’m still sceptical. Money is coming from Venture Capital – and those companies usually want some Return-on-Invest. Well, let’s stay curious. – I’ll stay focused on Mastodon.

  • Is it worth joining Mastodon?

These days I just hit the mark of 1500 followers on my photography account @hikingdude@mastodon.social on Mastodon.

That’s really – great, satisfying, surprising. Choose whatever you want. For an influencer on other platforms (the Entertainment media) this might not be a lot. But.. Wait…
