I am running this blog since 2009. The majority of the time it is dormant, and I mainly use it to document a solution that was hard to figure out and when I wished I had found it earlier. And in case that I have to solve the issue again, I know that I wrote it down here and don’t have to rely on some other website being online in a year or two when I come back to the same problem again.
It is just recently that I started to do more blogging — also because of leaving LinkedIn. Those posts (like this here!) are not How Tos, but more like “something I just wanted to say” – a typical blog, right?
Once in a while I look at the access statistics. And one thing that makes me feel just happy is the fact that traffic comes in on a lot of the “How To” posts that I did. Often, I wrote them long ago, sometimes totally unaware that someone else might have this issue as well. Never with SEO in mind. Just a brief description of the problem and the solution – that’s it.
But obviously people are getting there because they were searching for a solution of the same or similar problem. And this always gives me the feeling that I keep helping people solving problems.
The “typical” blog posts usually get short spikes for a couple of days and then fade out. Of course it is nice to see such a spike. But it’s also sad to see it dropping to zero after a couple of days. Obviously no one is looking for (or finding?) older blog posts. The HowTos in contrary generate their value over a long period of time.
Please share your solutions
What I want to say: Please, share your solution when you’ve solved a problem that took you a while to figure it out. Especially when you wished that you had found it online earlier. You might not be the only one having this issue!
