I just attended an event where Casey West also demoed some stuff. Just now I found his blog at https://caseywest.com as well. And scrolling through, I saw his post A Call for More Tech Leadership from 2015 where he writes:
Don’t promote your most talented technologists into people management. Promote them into technical leadership roles instead.

Well it’s 10 years later and still just true!
One could think that this is a well known thing meanwhile. But I just recall a conversation at a birthday party recently where a tech-professional told exactly this: to advance, he would have to become a manager – which he doesn’t want.
It’s just sad to see that. Especially.. Would I as an tech expert want to join a company where I know that my path obviously leads in a way that I just don’t want? That can’t be the intent of the company either, right?
